HDMI 2.1

HDMI 2.1 is the latest, high-speed audio/video standard. It dramatically increases bandwidth from 18Gbps (HDMI 2.0) to 48Gbps, unlocking support for up to 8K resolution at 60Hz and 4K resolution at 120Hz. It is considered the gold standard for high-end console and PC gaming.

HDMI 2.1 enhancements and features include:

• Massive Bandwidth: Capable of handling 4K at 120Hz and 8K at 60Hz
• Variable Refresh Rate (VRR): Syncs your display’s refresh rate with your device’s framerate to eliminate screen tearing and stuttering
• Auto Low Latency Mode (ALLM): Automatically switches your TV or monitor to a low-lag game mode when you boot up your console or PC
• eARC (Enhanced Audio Return Channel): Supports high-bitrate, object-based audio formats like Dolby Atmos and DTS:X

HDMI 2.1 is fully backwards compatible with HDMI 2.0, meaning you can plug an Ultra High Speed cable into older HDMI 1.4 or 2.0 devices. HDMI 2.1 features the same 19-pin connectors.

But, to take advantage of HDMI 2.1 features, you must use a certified Ultra High Speed HDMI Cable.

HDMI 2.1a added source based tone mapping (SBTM), allowing source devices to tell the display how to handle tone mapping. HDMI 2.1b added support for 10K resolution using DSC.
